Pat Hargan
Biography:
Originally from Rotherham in South Yorkshire, Pat Hargan has been based for the past few years in Galway, where he has been pursuing a full-time musical career. A singer-songwriter and guitarist, he has worked both as a solo artist (supporting Paddy Casey at UL a few months ago) and with various bands, including Skifo, an innovative group combining sequenced beats and samples with live performance.
A lover of traditional as well as modern musical styles, Pat played guitar on An Raicín Álainn by Aran sean-nós singer Lasairfhíona Ní Chonaola, which was picked by Hot Press as one of the top ten trad/folk albums of 2002. He has played with Lasairfhíona in venues around the country, including the National Concert Hall in Dublin, and at the Festival Interceltique in Lorient, Brittany.
Project Description:
Pat hopes to use the knowledge he has gained during the Music Technology course to broaden his compositional palette and to produce his own commercial recordings. His MSc project investigates applications of granular synthesis (a technique in which sounds are built up from very short 'grains') as a tool for traditional musical creativity. These include a drone, a polyrhythm generator, and a granular 'crossfade' mechanism.
