DAWN 04: MUSIC TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS

Michelle Staunton

Biography:
I started in the University of Limerick in 1999 and completed my degree in Computer Systems last year. Continuing on to study for a master degree in Music Technology, it seemed logical to merge my technical skills with my love for music. My passion is the piano!

Project Description:
An Interactive Performance System for Disklavier, Pianist and Computer
My MSc project is an exploration of extending the capabilities of piano performance, with a computer component added as a virtual performer, allowing both the pianist and computer to 'play' on the same piano. A MIDI-enabled Yamaha Disklavier piano is used in the implementation, equipped with the mechanisms to play by itself, providing a means of communication between the pianist and the computer performer. The development environment is Max/MSP. The system does not anticipate the realisation of any particular score, but instead is driven by the musician's performance input, constructing a musical presence and behaviour of its own. Played by a single human it produces output more like a duet.
