DAWN 04: MUSIC TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS

Bryan Gleeson

Biography:
Bryan Gleeson graduated from the University of Limerick in 1993 with a B.Eng. in Electronic Engineering and in 1995 with an M.Eng. research and thesis degree, investigating digital video decoding within a single ASIC device. His engineering software development experience spans more than five years, divided evenly between real-time automated inspection systems and telecommunications switching systems. Having taken a backpacking career break in 2001 to explore Australia and New Zealand, he decided to revisit academia and the University to refresh his skills and indulge his dual curiosities of music and modern technology. His interests include videography, developing sound effects, music (naturally), swimming and seeking forms of enjoyment that are both legal and inexpensive.

Project Description:
Beat detection using Discrete Wavelet Transform
The beat detector analyses a piece of acoustically recorded music and determines the fundamental underlying rhythm by means of multiscale Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) analysis. Miller Puckette's PureData is used as the supporting software platform for the detector, which exists as a custom-developed external object. The detector requires no high-level knowledge of the style of music with which it is supplied.
