DAWN 04: INTERACTIVE MEDIA PROJECTS

Thomas Finneran

Project Description:
Image of Thomas Finneran New Interactions with Time Before the invention of the clock, people simply
lived their lives by the cyclical nature of the cosmos; each day had only
two events - sunrise and sunset. All other interactions with 'time' were
simply event related e.g. the end of a task, the start of another.

With the introduction of the clock as we know it today, the clock era begun
as did time related stresses, deadlines, alarms etc.

As we enter a post-clock era, it's important to recognise that the
'event-time' of the pre-clock era - our personal time or what the Greeks
might describe as 'Kairos'- has eluded us increasingly throughout the clock
era. It must be our aspiration to rediscover and return to this personal
event related time if we are to combat all the unnecessary and outdated
stresses of a linear clock unrelated to many if not all of our activities.

This project is a study of the phenomenon that is our perceptions and
interactions with time. The aim of the project is to research these
interactions and perceptions briefly, using some user-centred methods, and
to describe one such interaction, presenting an alternative model to
highlight our current acceptance of the linear time and illustrating the
possibilities of a more 'event-based' clock.
