DAWN 04: INTERACTIVE MEDIA PROJECTS

Cathal Griffin

Biography:
Image of Cathal GriffinCathal Griffin graduated from the University of Limerick with an honours degree in Information Technology & Telecommunications. Having worked in industry with Motorola for 8 months, he decided that this wasn't the life for him and turned his attention to Interactive Media.

During the year in the Interactive Media course, Cathal was one of three students chosen to represent the University of Limerick and travelled to Siena, Italy to participate in the 'Siena Design Project 2004'. Cathal and his colleagues Aoife Ludlow and Tomás Finneran presented a series of lectures, demonstrations and exhibitions on a Interactive Design Project in the University of Siena to an international audience that was a representative of students, professors, academics, the Italian Press and the broader learning community over a seven day period. Representatives from several leading companies including Philips Design and NASA were also present.

Project Description:
With the introduction of the new E-Ink display technology I feel it is necessary to begin thinking about implementing new ways that this technology may be used. E-Ink is a revolutionary new display technology that makes it possible to present text and graphics on a flexible sheet of plastic, with the thickness of approximately 4 sheets of regular paper.

I propose to develop a new 'Memory Stick' device that is capable of communicating wirelessly with a sheet of this new 'paper' to allow it to change what it is currently displaying. This device should allow pages to be transmitted from the display to memory and vice versa. It should also allow for easy access to files using a simple file-directory menu system and small LCD display.
