DAWN 04: INTERACTIVE MEDIA PROJECTS

Aoife Ludlow

Biography:
Image of Aoife LudlowAoife graduated in 2002 from the National College of Art and Design with a Bdes Hons in Textile Design where she specialised in jewellery in non-traditional materials such as paper and plastics. Having always been interested in technology, materials and what we wear, and having had enough of teaching part-time while working in various jobs not related to design, she decided to return to college to study interactive media.

During the year in the Interactive Media course, Aoife was one of three students chosen to represent the University of Limerick and travelled to Italy to participate in the 'Siena Design Project 2004'. Aoife along with Cathal Griffin and Tomás Finneran presented a series of lectures, demonstrations and exhibitions on an Interactive Design Project in the University of Siena to an international audience that consisted of students, professors, academics, the Italian Press and the broader learning community. Representatives from several leading companies including Philips Design and NASA were also present.

Project Description

Remembering to Forget?
An exploration of personal ephemeral technologies: jewellery to remember and forget.
Jewellery and jewellery boxes are receptacles of presence and absence, containers of memory, signifiers of relations and relationships, people and places. It is not simply something one wears, it has meaning and value from these personal associations. It also has physical qualities; it has a weight which is missed, a surface which catches the sun form time to time, a long earned tan line which will gradually fade if the piece is removed. Jewellery often acts as a reminder, but what happens if you are trying to forget? I'm interested in this time, this transition or middle ground. I'm interested in exploring this idea with a view to creating jewellery or a jewellery box that would mediate the idea of progressing absence, of change, of moving on.
